National Battlefield of Fort Donelson:
The Union soldiers were marching south to confront the Confederacy during the 1860s Civil War. Since it was located on the River Cumberland, Fort Donelson was crucial. When the Union took Fort Donelson in February 1862, it was their first big Civil War success. Then, as now the fort was under Union control, the Confederacy's door was now open.
Travelers can get to know about the war, see the cannons and earthworks, and stroll through the battlefield on one of two trails at Fort Donelson. Picnic spots, stroll, parking along River Cumberland is also available. In addition, the Dover Hotel and National Cemetery at Fort Donelson, a historic edifice where on February 16, 1862, the Confederate army was forced to surrender to Ulysses S. Grant, are both located in Fort Donelson.
The Visitor's Center in National Battlefield at Fort Donelson can be reached at (931) 232-5706. The visitor's center lies off Highway 79, slightly west of Dover's downtown area. In Explorations, you may learn more about Fort Donelson.
Land in the Middle of the Lakes:
The Land between the Lakes is entered from the south through Dover. The United States Forest Service manages the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. This desolate 170,000-acre region is a fantastic spot to spend a few days or longer. Elk & Bison Prairie, The Nature Station, Homeplace 1850s, Turkey Bay OHV Area, and Golden Pond Planetarium are among the park's many attractions.
LBL also has hundreds of miles of gorgeous hiking and bike trails, as well as equestrian camping, riding, and a variety of other outdoor activities. More information can be found in our Land Between the Lakes section.
Lake Barkley is a body of water in the United States:
Lake Barkley was created in 1964 when the Cumberland River was dammed at Grand Rivers, Kentucky. Stewart County's terrain is made interesting by Lake Barkley's floodwaters. Lake Barkley appears to be everywhere at the summer pool, especially in the places east of the river. In the Dover area, most of the lake is marshy and relatively shallow during winter pool, when the height is 4 to 5 feet lower than usual. On the other hand, Lake Barkley is fantastic for fishing, boating, and other leisure activities. For more information on Lake Barkley, go here!
